Slim pickings, literally

Well, it turns out that one actually CAN be too late to buy vegetable plants, as the dadly man and I discovered to our dismay on Monday afternoon. We were able to buy only three different kinds of plants (as we decided watermelon and pumpkins were probably beyond the scope of our abilities AND our lil' raised bed.)

So here's what we're looking at for our pathetic potential summer harvest. The squash and the cucumber are already looking exhausted and ready to throw in the...root? And I have to stake them (vampire) tomatoes so they don't get all floppy and rotty, too.

Still, one has to start somewhere. And I am excessively fond of zinnias.
